History

Alternative Investment Group was co-founded in August 1996 by Stewart Greenfield and David Storrs to manage marketable alternative investments through a fund of funds approach, with a focus on fundamentally-oriented, hedged investment strategies. The firm’s funds are modeled on an 18-manager fund of hedge funds managed by Stewart Greenfield from 1990 to 1996 to invest his own capital and that of his former partners at Oak Investment Partners, one of the premier venture capital firms in the U.S..

The firm launched Alternative Investments, L.P., for U.S. taxable investors, in late 1996; Alternative Investments Institutional, L.P., for U.S. tax-exempt investors, in January 1998; and Alternative Investments International, L.P, for U.S. taxable and tax-exempt investors, in July 2003. In October 1999, the firm was appointed investment advisor in relation to the Diversified Absolute Return Fund of Mulit-Manager Investment Programmes PCC LLimited, a Guernsey-based and regulated investment fund of funds.

To ensure strong discipline in managing its funds, the firm expanded its partner base, starting in 2002. Ellen Kanner joined the firm shortly after its founding and became partner for Operations and Compliance in May 2002. Maria Tapia joined in May 2002 as Partner for Investments and Partner Relations, Marita Wein in February 2003 as Partner for Risk Management, and Richard Cheung joined in August 2005 and became Partner for Investments in January 2008.
